The ocean covers more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and underpins global trade, energy development, intercontinental communications, food supply and the functioning of ecosystems. Due to limited connectivity, poor visibility, high pressure and harsh sea conditions, it remains one of the least digitalized and automated physical environments. As AI becomes more deeply integrated into marine equipment, smart ships, unmanned surface vessels, AUVs, ROVs and subsea robots are evolving from remotely controlled machines into autonomous systems that can understand their surroundings, plan missions and carry out physical tasks. Marine operations are therefore shifting from standalone equipment and manual control towards remote operation, persistent deployment and coordination across multiple platforms.
Marine physical AI is also expanding beyond navigation support, surveying and inspection into offshore energy, subsea engineering, marine science, aquaculture, port logistics and maritime safety. This growth is creating a broader market that includes intelligent equipment, enabling components, control systems, mission software, data services and operating platforms.
