香港中文大学计算机科学与工程系助理教授 李煜先生香港中文大学计算机科学与工程系助理教授李煜先生分享了题为《人工智能与虚拟细胞如何助力生物智造》的前沿报告。李煜教授2025年入选智源学者,2024年入选《麻省理工科技评论》中国区"35岁以下科技创新35人",并入选APEC 30岁以下亚太青年领袖,2022年入选福布斯亚洲30岁以下精英榜,是AI与生命科学交叉领域备受瞩目的青年科学家。李煜教授在演讲中系统介绍了其团队围绕"虚拟细胞"构建的核心研究成果。他指出,AI与合成生物学的结合可比拟自然语言处理的发展逻辑——从分子层面的蛋白质与RNA结构预测,到细胞层面的基因表达与药物响应建模,再到多细胞层面的胚胎发育模拟,人工智能正从辅助工具转变为生物制造的"核心引擎",推动传统合成生物学的"设计-构建-测试-学习"范式向"学习-设计-构建-测试"的新范式跃迁。

Professor Lei’s main research areas include life science philosophy, bioethics, and ethical governance of emerging technology. She has led several national-level projects such as the National Key R&D Program and major projects under the National Social Science Fund. She has published over ten books and more than 100 papers. In 2019, she published the first policy commentary article in the domestic humanities field in Nature: “Reboot Ethics Governance in China.” Here, she first introduced the concepts of “ethical governance of technology” and “ethics first” in China, and systematically explained the basic principles of ethical governance of technology. These concepts and principles have been adopted in a series of central documents and the Opinions of the State Council on Strengthening Ethical Governance of Technology. In her speech, Professor Lei pointed out that AI technology has accelerated the innovation pace of synthetic biology, but it also brings unprecedented ethical challenges and governance difficulties. She stated that sustainable innovation is essential for long-term success, and comprehensive ethical guidelines and modern governance systems are crucial for the sustainable development of the synthetic biology industry. From multiple perspectives including the development trends of Al*Bio technology, ethical governance, and regulatory policies, she systematically explained how to establish an ethical governance framework compatible with technological innovation, providing profound insights for all practitioners and highlighting the baseline and direction for the healthy development of the industry.

Keynote Speech: The Application Prospects of Engineering Phages

Dr. Tan Xin, General Manager of Zhongke Xinfly (Shenzhen) Biotechnology Co., Ltd.

Dr. Tan Xin, General Manager of Zhongke Xinfly (Shenzhen) Biotechnology Co., Ltd., presented a special talk on “The Application Prospects of Engineering Phages”.

With extensive experience in clinical medicine and phage research, Dr. Tan Xin has led nearly 60 clinical applications of phage therapy, possessing systematic expertise from patient screening, phage matching, treatment plan design, to efficacy and safety evaluation. He has presided over multiple projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, and joined Zhongke Xinfly as a co-founder in 2025. In his speech, Dr. Tan Xin systematically discussed the potential of engineering phages in various fields such as biomedicine, modern agriculture, and environmental ecology. He focused on the company’s successful treatment of multiple severe drug-resistant infections using personalized phage treatment plans, as well as the progress in developing generic new drugs. Additionally, he mentioned the application of engineering phages in animal health, serving as a green “substitute for antibiotics” solution for livestock, poultry, and aquaculture, effectively addressing antibiotic abuse and bacterial resistance in animal husbandry. Dr. Tan Xin noted that phage therapy, as an important application of synthetic biology in the field of microbial group engineering, is gradually moving from the laboratory to clinical and industrial applications, showing broad commercial prospects.

A Major White Paper Will Be Released, Establishing a Foundation for Industry Research

Mr. Yang Xiaocheng, Senior Partner and Managing Director of Frost & Sullivan China, and Mr. Luo Wei, General Manager of the National Bio Manufacturing Industry Innovation Center, jointly unveiled the upcoming Global and China Synthetic Biology and Bio Manufacturing Industry Development White Paper (2026) to be released in mid-August.

Yang Xiaocheng said that Frost & Sullivan will continue to deepen cooperation with the National Bio Manufacturing Industry Innovation Center, using multi-level research reports as a medium to continuously track industry developments and provide high-quality research insights and strategic recommendations to the industry. Luo Wei expressed that the Innovation Center values its joint research with Frost & Sullivan, and in the future, both parties will collaborate more deeply in industry research, standard setting, and enterprise incubation.

Meanwhile, Ms. Sun Rong, Consulting Director of Frost & Sullivan China, as the main person in charge and author of the Global and China Synthetic Biology and Bio Manufacturing Industry Development White Paper (2026), provided an early interpretation of the core content of the report.

Sun Rong pointed out that this white paper continues the 2025 release of the Shanghai Synthetic Biology and Bio Manufacturing Industry Development White Paper (2025). The writing process follows Frost & Sullivan’s professional standards in industry research, relying on the collaborative research framework of “government, industry, academia, research, finance, application, and service”. It integrates resources, insights, and empirical cases from key entities at all levels of the industry chain, representing a collaborative achievement of the entire industry. The Frost & Sullivan research team analyzed industrial policies, innovation ecosystems, and cluster development models in various countries around the world, compared with the development paths of leading enterprises and innovation platforms at home and abroad, and systematically summarized the common patterns and regional differences in global industry development. By combining China’s industrial research advantages, platform construction status, and industrialization characteristics, it deeply explored industry resources, development challenges, and core competitive advantages, taking into account the global macro environment and China’s micro practices, ensuring a comprehensive, objective, and practical research perspective. The core goal of this report is to provide government agencies, investment institutions, the industry, research institutions, and all sectors of society with comprehensive, objective, professional, and implementable insights and decision-making references for industry development.

Two Major Strategic Partnerships Signed to Build a Collaborative Ecosystem of Industry, Academia, Research, and Application

During the forum, Frost & Sullivan signed two significant strategic partnerships with the National Bio Manufacturing Industry Innovation Center, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and Fudan University, marking a new stage in the deep integration between industry service platforms, national-level innovation platforms, and top universities.

Frost & Sullivan and the National Bio Manufacturing Industry Innovation Center established the “Global Synthetic Biology and Bio Manufacturing Industry Research Center”. Both parties will focus on synthetic biology and bio manufacturing, conducting long-term, comprehensive, and deep strategic cooperation in four core areas: technological innovation implementation, industry ecosystem building, industry research empowerment, and high-quality project incubation and transformation. Specific cooperation includes: jointly conducting industry research and white paper compilation, co-organizing industry forums and matchmaking activities, establishing an integrated service and technology transformation enabling platform, and helping to scale up and improve the quality of the domestic bio manufacturing industry.

The forum features two high-quality roundtable discussions, focusing on industrial investment challenges and AI integration development, offering diverse perspectives for participants.

Roundtable Discussion 1: Investment Challenges and Solutions in Biomanufacturing Industry

The first roundtable discussion is titled "Investment Challenges and Solutions in Biomanufacturing Industry." Hosted by Dr. Li Shiyuan, founder of the synthetic biology media "Transformer," who is also the author of "Synthetic Biology: The Art of Life Programming." He graduated from the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and brings academic depth and industry insights in synthetic biology.

Dr. Yuan Lin shared Daosheng Biology’s experiences and lessons in the industrialization of synthetic natural pigments, stressing that process scaling and cost control are key to making technologies commercially viable. The guests agreed that investment in synthetic biology requires investment institutions to have specialized technical expertise and patient capital characteristics, and also needs government, industry, and research institutions to jointly build a more comprehensive pilot platform, regulatory standards, and market access system.

Roundtable Discussion 2: Development and Challenges of Biomanufacturing Industry in the AI Era

The second roundtable, titled "Development and Challenges of Biomanufacturing Industry in the AI Era," is hosted by Dr. Dai Lei, Deputy Director of the Synthetic Biology Institute at Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Director of the Synthetic Microbiome Research Center. Dr. Dai is a chief scientist in a national key research project, a national young talent, and was listed in the "35 Under 35" list by MIT Technology Review China. His laboratory focuses on rational design and precise regulation of microbial genome structure and function using synthetic biology tools to address issues in human health and agricultural production.

This panel discussion provided a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of topics such as practical implementation paths, technical barriers, commercialization challenges, and compliance risks in AI-driven biomanufacturing. Ms. Tang Menghua shared Frost & Sullivan China’s experience in AI-assisted protein design, highlighting how AI significantly enhances the efficiency of developing biocompatible materials like human-derived collagen. However, clinical validation and market acceptance of final products remain critical factors. Ms. Wang Jun, from the perspective of compliance in AI pharmaceutical companies, examined legal issues related to intellectual property protection, data security, and regulatory approvals in the context of generative AI in drug development, emphasizing the need for balanced approaches between technological innovation and compliance management. Mr. Zhang Qiang, from an investment perspective, presented Lenovo Venture Capital’s investment strategy in AI4S and biomanufacturing, noting that current bottlenecks are shifting from AI generation to wet lab validation and iteration. Differentiated competitiveness will be achieved through scenario understanding, accumulated process know-how, and private data generated by proprietary automation platforms. Ms. Zhu Jie, based on Enhe Technology’s practices in AI-driven biomanufacturing, explained how Physical AI integrates the entire process from AI design and automated experiments to large-scale production, helping AI4S transition from a research tool to a real-world application and enhancing the industrial delivery capabilities of biomanufacturing. As the founder of an AI×BIO startup, Mr. Liu Dapeng shared the company’s technological advancements in using AI algorithms and cell models to predict target gene targets and improve desired products, as well as the practical challenges faced by startups in applying advanced technologies to industrial settings to boost efficiency and achieve value creation. Director Dai Lei concluded that the deep integration of AI and synthetic biology is reshaping the industry’s research paradigm. The key to successful implementation lies in creating irreplaceable real value in specific applications, which requires continuous collaboration among academia, industry, and investment sectors.

This special forum on synthetic biology and biomanufacturing offered a high-level, in-depth, and multi-faceted intellectual exchange for the industry. We had the opportunity to hear profound insights from Academician Zhao Guoping, based on the fundamentals of the discipline and national strategies, as well as his expectations for peers.
