The 2026 OAPAC Oriental Plastic Surgery and Beauty Art Conference was held at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music's Shangyin Opera House from October 26 to 28. The conference focused on international exchanges in the field of plastic surgery and beauty, cutting-edge clinical practices, and the development of young doctors. It brought together experts and scholars from home and abroad to promote the integration of medical science and art humanities, as well as academic dialogue between East and West through specialized forums and academic exchanges.

On October 27, 2026, at the OAPAC conference, Frost & Sullivan (hereinafter referred to as 'Frost & Sullivan') jointly released the '2026 Global Animal-Based Collagen Industry White Paper' (hereinafter referred to as 'White Paper') with Ficang Biotech. The White Paper examines the current state and future trends of the global animal-based collagen industry. It systematically analyzes the material characteristics, industrial chain structure, global market landscape, consumer demands, regulatory policies, industry challenges, and future development directions of collagen. By combining the research and development technologies and industrialization practices of representative companies such as Ficang Biotech, the paper analyzes the application progress of animal-based collagen in medical repair, medical beauty injections, skincare, and nutrition and health fields. With the continuous development of biomaterial technology and the increasingly detailed end-demand, the animal-based collagen industry is expanding from traditional raw material extraction to structural regulation, functional adaptation, and multi-scenario applications. Raw material safety, core processes, clinical evidence, and standardization have become important supports for the high-quality development of the industry.

Multiple demand drivers: Animal-based collagen expanding to high-end application scenarios

Population aging, growing tissue repair needs, and upgraded medical beauty consumption are driving the continuous expansion of the application areas of animal-based collagen. As an important component of natural extracellular matrix, collagen possesses material characteristics such as structural support, biocompatibility, and degradability. It has established a foundation for applications in wound repair, hemostasis, medical beauty injections, and some tissue engineering materials.

As medical and health needs develop towards refinement and personalization, different scenarios require differentiated requirements for the structural integrity, mechanical properties, degradation characteristics, and clinical safety of collagen raw materials. The medical beauty sector focuses more on natural effects and tissue-level compatibility, while the medical repair sector emphasizes material stability, tissue compatibility, and accumulation of clinical evidence, promoting the development of animal-based collagen toward high-value-added applications.

Technological innovation: Extraction, purification, and controllable self-assembly technologies continue to be optimized

The processing technology of animal-based collagen directly affects the structural integrity, purity, and application performance of materials. Focusing on preserving the natural triple helix structure, controlling potential immunogenicity, and ensuring batch consistency, key processes such as extraction, purification, emulsification, and fiber self-assembly are continuously optimized to support material development for different application scenarios.

On the basis of extraction and purification, the technological development of animal-based collagen further focuses on matching the material structure with application requirements. The de-terminalization process aims to reduce potential immunogenicity, the emulsification process improves the uniformity and fineness of materials, and the controllable self-assembly technology explores different mechanical and tissue compatibility requirements by regulating collagen fibers and fiber bundles, providing a material development path for refined medical beauty and tissue repair applications.

Raw materials and quality management: Source control and whole-process quality control are continuously strengthened

The quality of animal-based collagen raw materials is closely related to the animal species, donor health status, tissue source, and production process. As related products expand to high-demand scenarios such as injections, implants, and tissue repair, the importance of raw material traceability, pathogen risk control, and whole-process quality management has increased further.

Focusing on the safe and stable supply of medical-grade raw materials, industry quality management has shifted emphasis to the management of donors and raw material sources, covering health status, quarantine records, and raw material acquisition. Transportation, storage, and factory inspection are strengthened. By linking raw material sources, test results, and production batch information, a whole-process record and trace system is improved to support the identification of abnormal batches, quality issue investigation, and batch consistency control.

Consumer insights: Injection demand focuses on the eye area and nasolabial folds, with attention to safety and natural effects

Consumer surveys conducted by Frost & Sullivan in 11 cities and 230 valid samples showed that the areas where collagen injections were received in the past mainly included the eye area and nasolabial folds. Among them, the eye ring depression accounted for the highest proportion, at 44.5%, followed by nasolabial folds/frown lines (41.8%) and crow's feet (36.4%). The survey results indicate that collagen injections have relatively concentrated consumer demand in scenarios such as refined improvement of the eye area and modification of facial wrinkles and depressions.

In terms of product selection, the proportions of respondents who considered safety, natural effects, and doctor recommendations "somewhat important" or "extremely important" were 98.3%, 95.7%, and 92.6% respectively. Brand trust and recognition were both 87.4%, higher than the 72.6% related to price factors.

Industry integration: Diverse layouts formed in the fields of medical beauty, medicine, and health

As animal-based collagen technology and end applications continue to expand, medical beauty, medicine, and functional health are gradually forming an integrated industry development direction. The medical beauty sector focuses on product development around injection performance, refined filling, and consumer experience; the medical sector pays more attention to tissue repair, material biocompatibility, and clinical evaluation; the functional health sector further expands consumer scenarios such as daily nutritional supplements and skin care.

Taking Ficang Biotech as an example, the company has formed a multi-scenario business layout based on active collagen raw materials and core technologies. Among them, FILLDERM has obtained the registration certificate for Class III medical devices. The controllable self-assembly technology platform is being used to explore the application of raw materials in medical fields such as skin repair, and BIOYONCE further covers oral wellness products. Different business areas have a certain collaborative foundation in raw materials, research and development, and quality management, enabling the company to gradually expand the application scope of raw materials.

Global layout: Quality system and international market expansion are promoted synergistically

The global animal-based collagen market has different development characteristics due to differences in raw material resources, consumer demand, and regulatory environments. The European and American markets have a long history of development in medical materials, quality standards, and high-value-added application fields. The Latin American region has rich livestock raw material resources, and the Asia-Pacific market continues to develop in functional health consumption and end-product development.

As domestic enterprises gradually accumulate in raw material management, production processes, and quality systems, expanding into the international market has become a focus of the industry. The construction of medical device quality management systems and full-chain raw material traceability provide a foundation for enterprises to carry out overseas business. In the future, enterprises still need to combine the product access, clinical evidence, regulatory requirements, and local operation conditions of target markets to steadily advance international market expansion.
