X-ray inspection systems integrate an X-ray source, detector, precision motion-control system, and image acquisition and analysis software. By capturing and processing signals transmitted through the object under inspection, they enable non-destructive visualization of internal structures, defect detection, dimensional measurement, and materials analysis.
The industry originated with radiography. Advances in tomographic imaging, digital detectors, and computer-based image reconstruction have extended its applications from medical imaging to industrial inspection and scientific research. The field continues to evolve toward higher resolution, in-line inspection, and intelligent automation. In China, the industry began with 2D radiographic inspection equipment and has since expanded into industrial CT, micro-CT, and the development of core components and algorithms, with localization continuing to deepen.
Downstream applications span scientific research, electronics, new-energy industries, aerospace and defense, automotive manufacturing, and automotive components. Increasing product complexity and more stringent quality and reliability requirements are driving demand for non-destructive testing (NDT). The industry is moving toward higher-resolution 3D/CT imaging, higher-energy X-ray penetration, faster scanning, AI-enabled defect recognition, and automated inspection, with systems increasingly integrated into production-line quality control.
International suppliers retain a technological edge in the high-end market, while domestic suppliers are strengthening their competitiveness in response to import-substitution demand through customization, cost advantages, and localized service. Some domestically developed research-grade micro-CT systems now offer imaging performance comparable to leading high-end products. Domestic systems are also expanding into advanced research, advanced manufacturing, and in-line inspection applications.
