From September 27th to 28th, 2023, Frost & Sullivan's (Frost & Sullivan, abbreviated as: Frost & Sullivan) Second New Investment Expo and the 17th Frost & Sullivan Global Growth, Innovation and Leadership Summit (abbreviated as 'Frost & Sullivan New Investment Conference') - the New Investment Summit Forum on Life Sciences was grandly held at the Shangri-La Hotel in Pudong, Shanghai. This forum was co-hosted by Frost & Sullivan and the China Biomedical Industry Chain Innovation and Transformation Alliance (CBIITA), with the theme of 'New Directions for the Future: Forge Ahead'. It gathered industry leaders, life science enterprises, investment institutions and professional service providers to focus on new investment opportunities in life sciences, and jointly discuss the capital and industrial forces for enterprises to navigate through cycles.

 

At this forum, Fu Daxu, President and Deputy Secretary of the Shanghai Institute of Biotechnology and President of the Shanghai Biomedical Association, shared his keynote speech titled "Biomedical Innovation and Industrial Development." The speech mainly covered two aspects: the development pattern of the biomedical industry globally and in China, and the characteristics of biomedical technological innovation.

01Global and China's Biomedical Industry Development Pattern

Fu Daxu pointed out that the global pharmaceutical market is growing steadily. In the future, the main therapeutic areas of the global pharmaceutical market will still be oncology and immunotherapy. At the same time, innovationNumber of targetsThe continuous growth will also bring about a richer pipeline of innovative biopharmaceutical products. Judging from China's pharmaceutical expenditure and manufacturing scale in recent years, the overall growth of the Chinese pharmaceutical market has tended to be stable, while biopharmaceutical innovation has shown a strong momentum.

 

Over the past decade, China has achieved significant results in biopharmaceutical innovation. The number of new drugs approved for marketing in China accounts for about 15% of the global total, and the number of new drugs in research by local enterprises accounts for 33%. There are more than 5,500 new drug clinical trials conducted in China. Fu Daxu stated that China's drug research and industry development are entering a new stage of innovation leapfrogging. The clinical development pipeline is growing rapidly, and China's pharmaceutical innovation output has increased in both 'quantity' and is expected to improve in 'quality'.

Fu Daxu pointed out three major characteristics of biomedical technology innovation: breakthroughs in biotechnology innovation, cross-border integration of biotechnology, and data and intelligence-driven approaches.

The source of development for the biopharmaceutical industry is the research and development of innovative drugs, which is a complex systematic project with high investment, high risk, and a long cycle. It reflects the latest achievements and breakthroughs in the frontier fields of life sciences and biotechnology. At the conference, Fu Daxu introduced the progress of innovative drug products that have emerged in recent years, including antibody drugs, PROTACs drugs, cell therapy products, gene therapy products, and synthetic biology products.

 

Cross-border integration of biotechnology

Fu Daxu introduced that, taking the discipline of biomedical engineering as an example, the seamless integration of interdisciplinary research with medical clinical applications tightly links basic scientific research, clinical research, and industrial development, truly constructing a complete innovation value chain driven by technological progress to drive industrial development.

 

Data and Intelligent Driving

Life science research has entered an era of 'data-intensive scientific discovery,' and the integrated development of biotechnology and information technology has become a new characteristic of human social evolution. Fu Daxu stated that the current global new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is on the verge of breaking out. The rapid development and widespread application of emerging technologies such as genomics, gene editing, big data, artificial intelligence, and gene sequencing have propelled life science into an era of big data, large platforms, and major discoveries. In addition, AI empowers new drug research and development functions, with artificial intelligence technology having penetrated into all stages of new drug research and development, particularly in target discovery, compound synthesis, and drug repositioning.
