For green methanol to become the mainstream ship fuel, the cost barrier must be overcome first. According to the report's calculations: at an electricity price of 0.3 yuan/kWh, the tax-free cost of electricity-based methanol is approximately 4,536 yuan/ton, far higher than traditional methods; when the electricity cost drops to 0.1 yuan/kWh, the cost drops to 2,156 yuan/ton, making it comparable to traditional fossil fuel-based methanol. The commercialization timeline for green methanol is largely determined by the electricity price. Only by understanding the electricity price can we determine when a project will be profitable.

According to the data cited in the report, the cost of traditional natural gas-based methanol is as low as 100-300 US dollars/ton, coal-based methanol is 150-250 US dollars/ton; bio-methanol is around 327-764 US dollars/ton; electricity-based methanol has the highest cost, reaching 800-1,600 US dollars/ton. The source of the gap is clear: electricity-based methanol is an energy-intensive process. Producing one ton of methanol requires about 10-11 megawatt-hours of electricity, and it is highly dependent on the cost of green hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
The report's calculations based on assumptions such as a carbon cost of 100 yuan/ton and an electricity cost of 0.3 yuan/kWh show that the tax-free cost of green methanol is approximately 4,536 yuan/ton, with electricity cost accounting for 77%; to cover the including tax cost and reasonable profit, the selling price needs to reach 5,433 yuan/ton. Electricity is the absolute dominant factor—how much the electricity price drops determines how close green methanol is to market availability.

In addition to the pure electricity-based route, the report calculated two lower-cost biomass routes. The total cost of biomass gasification-based methanol is approximately 3,719.29 yuan/ton, with biomass raw materials accounting for more than 60% of the total cost; the total cost of biomass coupled with green hydrogen-based methanol is approximately 3,454.60 yuan/ton, with biomass raw materials accounting for 40.1% and green hydrogen accounting for 31.2%.
The engineering ingenuity of the coupled route is worth noting: it eliminates the conversion unit, saving steam; it sends the green oxygen produced by water electrolysis into the gasifier, reducing the separation load; then uses green hydrogen to adjust the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio of the synthesis gas to 2.0, breaking through the chemical stoichiometric limitations of traditional biomass gasification, and increasing the methanol output per unit of raw material. This explains why 74% of China's bio-methanol projects use a mixed configuration of "biomass gasification + hydrogen electrolysis" – using engineering methods to bypass the high cost of pure electricity-based production.
But this route also has limits: biomass raw materials are constrained by global supply, and cannot alone support demand of hundreds of millions of tons. The electricity-based route, which is not restricted by raw material regions, represents the long-term potential.

The first factor is the green electricity price. The report predicts that the electricity cost is expected to drop to around 0.1 yuan/kWh, at which time the cost of electricity-based methanol will drop to 2,156 yuan/ton, and the electricity cost will decrease from 77% to 55%. The second factor is equipment cost reduction: in 2024, the winning bid price for alkaline electrolyzers (ALK) was approximately 1,535 yuan/kW, and for proton exchange membrane electrolyzers (PEM), it was about 6,028 yuan/kW. The price of electrolyzers is still on a downward trend.
The third factor is the carbon price and methanol price. When the traditional methanol price breaks through 3,000 yuan/ton, the cost advantage of green methanol significantly narrows; under the carbon credit mechanism, each ton of emissions reduction can reduce costs by approximately 160-170 US dollars. In March 2026, due to geopolitical factors, methanol futures once reached approximately 3,157 yuan/ton – the more expensive the traditional fuel, the earlier green methanol will become affordable.
The report predicts that by 2050, the cost of green methanol is expected to drop to 250-630 US dollars/ton, gradually enabling it to compete with fossil fuels. However, it should be noted that the above calculations rely on assumptions, and actual costs vary with electricity prices, raw material prices, and carbon prices. When negotiating purchases, scenarios should be considered, rather than relying on a single number.
This article has calculated the cost accounts and three cost reduction variables for the three technical routes of green methanol. However, decision-making requires more detailed inputs: cost sensitivity under different electricity price scenarios, the unit consumption and price range of biomass raw materials, and the cost curves of electrolyzers and carbon capture. The complete version of "2026 China Green Methanol Industry: The Zero-Carbon Fuel Track Has Begun Fully" provides a complete cost breakdown and long-term affordability path calculation for each route, which can be used for project economic evaluation and fuel procurement negotiations.
